Bolstered by proclamations from the President and all 50 governors, National Great Outdoors Month (GO Month) celebrates everything great about America’s abundant outdoor recreation resources while highlighting Americans’ passion for the outdoors and calling for a re-dedication to conservation efforts and volunteerism.
“GO Month has the potential to engage every American in every community across the country in fun outdoor activity. From four Governor-hosted Capital Camp-Outs to National Trails Day, National Fishing and Boating Week and National Get Outdoors Day to the Great American Backyard Campout, there are endless ways get outdoors and have FUN,” commented Derrick A. Crandall, president of the American Recreation Coalition and a Co-Chair of National Great Outdoors Month. “We have a simple message: ‘get outdoors and experience the many benefits of outdoor activity.’ Go camping with friends and bring your dog, take a kid fishing, mountain bike, help build a trail, play bocce on the beach, explore America’s 3.5 million miles of rivers.”
To ensure that outdoor memories are made easy, National Great Outdoors Month founding sponsor The Coleman Company, Inc. is “setting up camp” at Walmart stores across the United States. For seven weeks, Coleman’s “Ranger Days” Tour will feature Coleman rangers, joined by representatives from state and federal land management agencies leading interpretive talks highlighting America’s vast outdoor recreation resources; Scouts will lead campsite demos and not-for-profit partners will share “how to” and “where to” information. Coleman will also offer free copies of the Coleman® Great Outdoors Gazette.
“Coleman is proud to sponsor National Great Outdoors Month. Believing in something means being fully committed and Coleman believes in protecting and promoting America’s outdoor resources. Whether you are camping, hiking, paddling, cycling, fishing or tailgating being outdoors is invigorating. America’s great outdoors have so much to offer and Coleman has everything to help you get there,” remarked Dave Allen, president of The Coleman Company, Inc.
With a large and growing consortium of federal, state, private sector and not-for-profit partners working to build participation in and enthusiasm for GO Month, their central goal is to engage Americans who now rarely participate in outdoors recreation in outdoor fun. With actions louder than words, the Governors of Kansas, Georgia, Colorado and Washington are leading the charge by hosting Capital Campouts welcoming urban youth and families to camp out on the grounds of their respective Governor’s mansions, or in nearby state parks.
National Great Outdoors Month 2014 (GO Month) includes events ranging from American Hiking Society’s National Trails Day® (June 7)and National Fishing and Boating Week (June 1-8) to National Marina Day (June 14), National Get Outdoors Day (June 14), the Student Conservation Association’s Founder’s Day of Service and the National Wildlife Federation’s Great American Backyard Camp-Out (June 28).
